Four students in Hong Kong are celebrating winning Top in the World awards for their outstanding performance in the June 2008 Cambridge IGCSE exams. The awards will be presented to the students at the Brilliance in Hong Kong awards ceremony, hosted by University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) at the InterContinental Hong Kong Hotel on Tuesday 28 October.
The Top in the World award recognises students who have received the highest exam result in the world in a single Cambridge IGCSE subject. The prizes will be awarded to: Danny Dongru Wang (French International School) for Cambridge IGCSE First Language French; Tsui Yue Cheong Ian (German Swiss International School) for Cambridge IGCSE Economics; Qin Ying Lim (King George V School) for Cambridge IGCSE Foreign Language Mandarin Chinese; and Renata Maria Hansford Snow (West Island School) for Cambridge IGCSE First Language English.
A further 19 students will receive Top in Hong Kong awards for gaining the highest result in Hong Kong in a single Cambridge IGCSE subject or across a group of subjects.
CIE has introduced a new Top in Hong Kong award this year for the student who achieved the highest mark in Cambridge IGCSE First Language Chinese. Most international schools in Hong Kong offer this subject, and entries in the June 2008 examination session increased by 19 percent on last year. It is ranked 7th in the Top 10 Cambridge IGCSE subjects taken by Hong Kong students. The award was shared by Ernest Hei Ming Chu (Sha Tin College) and Ryan Yuet Hang Lau (Hong Kong Exams and Assessment Authority).
The awards will be presented by Ms. Christina Lee, General Manager for Assessment Development, Hong Kong Exams and Assessment Authority. Xiaoyuan Nie (Alice), CIE Representative, will also be at the ceremony. She said: ‘Students in Hong Kong have some very impressive results to celebrate, and the ceremony is a great occasion to recognise their achievements and the teachers who made their results possible. Hong Kong entries in the Cambridge IGCSE June 2008 examination session have grown by a remarkable 16 percent on last year, and CIE is proud to work in partnership with schools here.’
What the winning students said about their Cambridge IGCSE studies:
‘It was good as the Cambridge IGCSEs allowed me to concentrate on subjects I liked and enjoyed while still maintaining a broad base of many different subjects (I took 10 subjects).’
Rebecca Yip (German Swiss International School), Top in Hong Kong for Cambridge IGCSE Biology
‘It was fun, dynamic and I learnt valuable knowledge galore that would otherwise be a stranger to me if I did not learn the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. It was a great experience, with an emphasis on understanding rather than simply recalling facts.’
Kan Man Fung Kenneth Junior (Hong Kong Exams and Assessment Authority), Top in Hong Kong for Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics
‘My Cambridge IGCSE learning during the past two years has provided me with a wide coverage of knowledge concerning the subjects taken and has aroused my interest in certain subjects. I think the Cambridge IGCSE examinations are an excellent and reliable way to assess students.’
Kan Hei Man Simple (Hong Kong Exams and Assessment Authority), Top in Hong Kong for Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language
‘The learning has been occasionally challenging. And the Cambridge IGCSE examinations were well organized. It was on the whole a success.’
Andrew John Kwok (German Swiss International School), Top in Hong Kong for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (Without Coursework)
