CIE today welcomes the Government announcement that Cambridge IGCSE subjects are now available to state schools in England.
Commenting, CIE Chief Executive, Ann Puntis, said:
“We welcome the Government’s announcement. As a not-for-profit organisation, we’re delighted that the Cambridge IGCSE has been recognised for the value it contributes to the school curriculum.
“The move to state funding mirrors the successful approach to IGCSE taken in the US, New Zealand, Germany and Spain, and means that, finally, the rigorous approach provided by the qualification will be accessible for all.”
The Cambridge IGCSE, which is already being offered in over 300 independent schools across the country, is an internationally recognised equivalent to the UK GCSE, which promises far more choice. Funding will include the core curriculum subjects: English, maths, the sciences and ICT.
“Cambridge IGCSE is currently being taken by students in more than 125 countries and by offering it more widely in the UK we will be giving young people in this country the opportunity to compete on an equal footing with students from all over the world,” added Ann Puntis.

Notes to Editors
Sixteen Cambridge IGCSE subjects have been accredited by Ofqual for teaching in UK state schools. They will also be included in school performance tables as soon as possible. The subjects accredited so far are:
- English (First Language, Second Language, Literature)
- Individual sciences (Biology, Physics, Chemistry)
- Art and Design
- Business Studies
CIE offers a total of 70 Cambridge IGCSE subjects which it hopes will gain accreditation in the next twelve months. The qualifications follow a different structure to the UK GCSE, providing linear courses, which are assessed at the end of the course.
