This lists are meant for lay people. Only lay people go by these lists. All these ranking are often fixed and also ranking agencies are paid. Note top German and Russian Universities are no where while unknown universities from countries such as China can often be found on top! Till last year no Chinese had won a Nobel Prize from work in China. Last year to give the Nobel Prize a degree of credibility a below average Chinese Tu Youyou was given the Prize.

While most Nobel Prizes are pretty political a few can be well deserved.

So firstly look at the genuine Nobel Prizes from the Nobel site for institutions: See and then Nobel Laureates and Research Affiliations

This gives you a good idea of the class of the schools particularly in subjects in which Nobel Prizes are awarded. Since some Prizes are excellent thus you get a rough idea of the class of these institutions.

Next talk to seasoned academicians and by word of mouth you can find a good school for yourself. Do not go by the political listing it is fixed via money, politics etc.
