Thu., Jan. 19, 2017, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Jan. 19 at 6:00 p.m. sharp (light refreshment available at 5:30 p.m.), the Center for Professional Development and the Department of Psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance will present Dr. Nancy Rappaport’s performance Regeneration.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2015 at age 55, Dr. Rappaport began writing as a means to integrate her new status as “patient” with her other, more comfortable roles as doctor, wife and mother of three. In Regeneration, through an autobiographical persona, Dr. Rappaport explores how she cultivated strength and joy as she journeyed through illness, treatment and recovery. In a surprising twist, she finds comfort in a most unusual place—Mount Auburn Cemetery—a Cambridge landmark that offers healing and consolation, while inspiring contemplation on mortality.

Dr. Rappaport is no stranger to the power of narrative. She is the author of the award-winning memoir, In Her Wake: A Child Psychiatrist Explores the Mystery of Her Mother's Suicide (2011). Her message holds hope that we can find in hardship the opportunity to transform our fear and anger into life-affirming connection to those we love.

It is her particular hope that Regeneration will help the healthcare providing members of her audience see that their own vulnerability can enhance their capacity to empathize and connect with patients.
