Pine Middle School students gathered to collect books that will help students in other schools. The students gathered the books during a two-week walk this month. The books will be donated to Spread the Word Nevada, a nonprofit organization that seeks to increase early literacy by placing books in the hands of children in at-risk or low-income communities.

"We have received a lot of books, far more than I expected," said Madeleine Garcia, a leadership teacher at Pine Middle School. "The school has really come together – all the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students – that was great!"

"They just made posters and shared that these books would be for children who can not have them and that these kids really grew up and they came together to form a school and a community and they put in a lot of effort to have all those books! "says Mackenzie Cortez, Spread the Word Nevada Program Manager in Washoe County. She estimates that thousands of books have been collected during this collection.

Cortez says the books on this disc will go to elementary school students Rita Cannan in Reno and Greenbrae Elementary School in Sparks.

Spread the Word Nevada draws a lot of his books from book readers. Since the organization expanded to Washoe County last year, several groups and businesses have sponsored book drives in the community. Cortez says that it is an easy way for the community to help give the joy of reading to more children and their families.

Spread the Word Nevada is a partner of the KOLO Cares pillar for 2019.
