After injecting the virus into the wall of the stomach of rats, sections of the nervous system made at different times during this migration made it possible to visualize the three links of the nervous chain which goes up from the stomach to several regions of the brain. Several cortical areas thus seem to control the stomach in two ways with opposite roles. The first part of the insular cortex and the medial prefrontal cortex to stimulate motor activity and secretion via the vagus nerve. The second part starts from the primary motor cortex to put the stomach to rest via the sympathetic system (responsible for a large number of automatic mechanisms in the human body such as the heart rate)."data-reactid =" 26 ">To reveal the anatomical paths of this innervation, the researchers used a well-known tracer, the rabies virus, capable of going up the nerve cells and crossing the reduced space called synapse which separates them.
